Ascend nearly 1,000 meters above sea level to explore Caltabellotta: walk through the Arab quarter of TerraVecchia, reach the Oak Rock with its Norman Cathedral, and take in endless views from the coast to the inland peaks.
Full Description
During this tour, you will visit Caltabellotta, one of the oldest towns in Sicily, located nearly 1,000 meters above sea level. You will walk through the alleys of the TerraVecchia district, of Arab origin, and climb up to the Rocca delle Querce. Here, you will visit the Cathedral of Maria Santissima della Catena, built by the Normans in the 11th century after their victory over the Saracens.
You will delve into the historical importance of the town, which was the ancient Sicanian fortress of Camico and, in 1302, the setting for the signing of the "Peace of Caltabellotta" that concluded the War of the Vespers between the Angevins and the Aragonese. Due to its exceptional geographical position, Caltabellotta offers a complete view over the southern coast and the mountainous hinterland, serving as a prime example of the preservation of the area's oldest traditions.
Upon request, you will have the opportunity to discover local flavors by including a stop at a local producer to watch the preparation and taste the traditional warm ricotta.
